Unfortunately I learned all gardening via trial and error. Herbs are a good place to start as most are hardy and hard to kill with bad gardening skills. I am an awful gardener. I never fertilize and hate weeding. I haven't even tested my soil to see what it needs and I work with soil testing all the time.
If you really want info and want it cheap call your local extension office (affiliated with all land grant colleges in each state) and they have loads of brochures and tips.
Start with herbs you usually cook with and add a couple that you always hear about but never try. That is how I ended up with Tarragon, which I love to put into homemade salad dressings.

All else fails, zucchini is hard to not grow well.
Thanks for checking out my blog!

I randomly found your blog today and enjoyed reading a chunk of it very much. I am hoping to learn something about gardening but I have no idea where to start. It seems overwelming. Soil types? Plant names? I just wanna eat. I was thinking I might start with an herb garden. Any books you can suggest? Thanks!
Fat Dancer
